EcoMedIslands project launched in Gozo to advance circular waste solutions across Mediterranean islands

Representatives of the EcoMedIslands project participated in the 2nd Interreg Euro-MED Italy Forum, held in Rome, Italy. The event brought together Italian project partners, regional authorities, policymakers and stakeholders involved in the Interreg Euro-MED Programme to exchange ideas, discuss shared challenges and strengthen cooperation across the Mediterranean region.

Amar Djedaoun, representing the Greening the Islands Foundation and Domenico Perfido, representing the Municipality of Berchidda, attended the Forum on behalf of the EcoMedIslands project, contributing to discussions on sustainability, innovation and the future of Mediterranean island communities.

Strengthening cooperation across the Mediterranean

The Interreg Euro-MED Italy Forum provided an important opportunity for participants to share experiences and explore new opportunities for collaboration. Moreover, the event encouraged dialogue among projects and organizations working towards common goals in sustainable development and regional resilience. By bringing together stakeholders from different sectors and territories, the Forum helped strengthen synergies and foster partnerships that can support long-term impact across Mediterranean regions.

Promoting circular economy and sustainable waste management

During the Forum, EcoMedIslands presented its vision for smarter and more sustainable waste management systems for Mediterranean islands. The project highlighted the importance of adopting circular economy approaches that reduce waste generation, increase resource efficiency and support environmental sustainability. In addition, EcoMedIslands showcased innovative solutions that combine digital technologies with community participation to address local waste management challenges. These approaches aim to help island communities improve environmental performance while creating more resilient and sustainable local economies.

Digital innovation for Mediterranean islands

Digital innovation is a key component of the EcoMedIslands strategy. Therefore, the project promotes the use of smart technologies and data-driven solutions that support more effective waste management and environmental monitoring. At the same time, EcoMedIslands recognizes that successful transformation requires active citizen participation. For this reason, the project places strong emphasis on community-driven solutions that encourage awareness, engagement, and local ownership.

Building a more sustainable future

The participation of EcoMedIslands in the 2nd Interreg Euro-MED Italy Forum reflects the project’s commitment to fostering cooperation, sharing knowledge and promoting innovative solutions for Mediterranean islands. As challenges related to waste management, sustainability and climate resilience continue to grow, collaboration between regions, municipalities and organizations becomes increasingly important. Through initiatives such as EcoMedIslands, Mediterranean islands can work together to develop practical solutions that contribute to a cleaner, smarter and more sustainable future.
