EcoMedIslands project launched in Gozo to advance circular waste solutions across Mediterranean islands

On 29 April 2026, the CPMR Islands Commission General Assembly took place in Cagliari, Sardinia. The event brought together island authorities, policymakers and organisations from across Europe. They discussed the future of island regions and their role in European development.

The meeting came at an important time for European islands. The European Union is currently shaping new policies for island territories. Therefore, the Assembly offered a valuable opportunity for participants to share views and priorities.

Supporting sustainable island development

The General Assembly focused on several important topics. These included island competitiveness, connectivity, innovation and sustainability. Participants also discussed the future European strategy for islands. Moreover, delegates worked on the 2026 Final Declaration of the CPMR Islands Commission. This document highlights the main priorities of island regions and strengthens their voice at the European level. These discussions closely match the objectives of the EcoMedIslands project. The project promotes sustainability, resilience, environmental protection and cooperation among Mediterranean islands.

Strengthening cooperation

The event also encouraged collaboration among island regions. Participants exchanged experiences and shared good practices. In addition, they explored opportunities for future partnerships. Such cooperation helps islands address common challenges more effectively. At the same time, it supports innovation and sustainable growth across island communities.

Addressing common challenges

Many island regions face similar difficulties. These include geographic isolation, limited accessibility, climate risks and economic challenges. Consequently, cooperation between islands remains essential. The CPMR Islands Commission General Assembly provides an important platform for discussion. It helps island representatives present their needs and priorities to European institutions.

EcoMedIslands contributing to a resilient future

EcoMedIslands participated actively in the General Assembly. Through its involvement, the project supports stronger cooperation among Mediterranean islands. Furthermore, EcoMedIslands promotes knowledge exchange and encourages sustainable solutions. These actions help island communities become more resilient and better prepared for future challenges. As European policies continue to evolve, projects such as EcoMedIslands can play an important role. They help connect island regions and support a more sustainable future for Europe’s islands.
